SECTION F: EXHAUST: --Turbocharger: TURBOCHARGERS: If your turbo isn't happy, then nobody's happy. Given the stress and operating conditions that these little puffers operate within, it's a wonder that they last as long as they do. We stock freshly rebuilt stock Mitsubishi TC03A original turbo units, available as both stock and performance-upgraded versions that allows you a simple, bolt-on solution to your turbo woes. NOTES: - all rebuilt turbocharger units are sold on a trade-in basis, with a refundable core charge fee applied (which will be fully refunded upon the return of a stock, factory, complete, un-damaged turbo unit). Rebuilt turbo units carry a 1-year (from date of purchase) warranty against defects in workmanship and materials only, subject to inspection and analysis of any failed unit. - these rebuilds are for "street" bikes, and not for drag or road-race use. Performance-upgrade units feature a slightly larger, more efficient compressor wheel, and/or a ceramic-coated turbine housing (the retention of as much exhaust heat as possible is the key to extracting more efficiency from your turbo). - all units should be used with the factory wastegate-control vacuum actuator. For even greater control and performance enhancement, use the HCP17910 or HCP17911 BOOST CONTROLLER module.....it's easy to install, tune, and tailor to your unique riding conditions and style! - a great review of some of the operating characteristics and problems inherent to the Yamaha XJ650 Turbo bikes can be reviewed at: http://www.turbomotorcycles.org/TMIOA/TechHelp_Yamaha.html A common problem with the turbo units on this bike is the small pressure relief valve situated at the front of the engine, just off to the left side of the oil filter element boss (on the crankcase). This spring-loaded "ball bearing" check valve is supposed to prevent oil supply to the turbocharger when the engine is off. If this check valve fails into the "always off" position (eliminating or reducing oil supply to the turbo), you'll burn up the turbo bearings mighty quick (like within a minute or two of operation). If the check valve fails in the "always open" position, it will allow a continual supply of oil to the turbo (even when the engine is off) and can result in a significant puddle of oil under the turbo unit (failure of the copper crush washers at the turbo oil supply inlet pipe can also cause this issue, but typically this type of failure will result in only small drops of oil under the turbo, whether then engine is running or not). If these situations are detected, the pressure relief valve must be serviced (no replacement is available) and be internally cleaned out of gunk, grime, crud, crap, and what-not. Note that the EXHAUST MANIFOLD or the WASTEGATE ACTUATOR are not included with any of the turbocharger units and should be ordered separate if needed. HCP17822 Rebuilt OEM TURBOCHARGER. Upgraded Rebuilt Turbocharger: These units will provide an increased level of performance and boost as compared to the factory-equipped turbo unit, whether used in the stock 1982 configuration or with the 1983 version with the "Power-Up" kit. A slightly larger, more efficient compressor wheel results in less turbo lag, and quicker spool-up, resulting in more boost at any given rpm's up to the maximum pressure. It is strongly recommended that an aftermarket WASTEGATE ACTUATOR or BOOST CONTROLLER module be used in conjunction with any of these upgraded turbochargers to allow the ultimate in performance. Your carb fuel circuits will almost always need to be enriched by 2-4 jet sizes over stock. HCP29782 Rebuilt OEM ULTIMATE UPGRADED TURBOCHARGER, for the maximum output possible. On this version, you get it all: the turbine (exhaust) housing has been ceramic-coated to help retain as much heat as possible, a larger, more efficient compressor wheel has been installed, and the exhaust housing has been ported and polished to make it less restrictive which reduces turbulence and further increases performance. All of these modifications vastly increase the turbo efficiency, reducing lag times, producing quicker spool-up, creating full boost at lower rpm 's and higher top end power. Thus you want to "capture and retain" as much of that exhaust system heat as is possible. This ceramic-coated EXHAUST COLLECTOR MANIFOLD is the perfect way to accomplish this heat retention. These are original factory manifolds that have been inspected, cleaned, and then ceramic-coated with a durable, satin-grey finish. Comes with an installation and tuning CD. Blue finish. $ 139.95 Turbocharger Knock Sensor: HCP10912 OEM knock sensor WIRE HARNESS, from the sensor to the main wiring harness. The knock sensor is located on the front of the cylinder jugs and “listens” for telltale vibrations (sound pressure waves) from the cylinders, indicating pre-ignition and potentially damage to the engine. This special harness takes the signal from the sensor and inputs it to the TCI, which will then retard timing when pinging or knocking is detected. Use 1 per bike. NOTE: it is imperative that the turbo wheel/shaft assembly be re-balanced after a rebuild or catastrophic turbocharger failure may occur! If oil leaks around the outside of this tube, then it’s this seal that is leaking. If the oil leaks from inside the tube, then the leak is internal to the pump, pump and is probably the HCP27594 shaft seal. Use 1 per engine. Each: $ 11.95 HCP27594 OEM oil pump DRIVESHAFT OIL SEAL. The metal-cased seal fits into the spacer plate in the oil pump around the pump main shaft. Failure of this seal (typically caused by a sticking pressure relief valve in the pump) will allow oil to flow back to the turbocharger via the return line, thus filling up the exhaust when the bike is stored for more than a day or two. NOTE: this seal fits very tightly into the spacer plate, and it is advisable that the spacer plate (which is aluminum) be heated up with a heat gun, etc. to allow the aluminum to expand, before attempting to “pop” the metal casing of the oil seal out of its cavity. Be careful to not scratch or gouge the spacer plate when prying!
